A night with Mrs Jones

I had a fantastic evening with my great friend Fee Doran aka Mrs Jones last night.  Whenever we get together there's always dressing up and a lot of laughing involved.  Here is a picture she took of me wearing my Christian Louboutin for Giles shoes.  She had me kneeling on a mini chaise in front of my bedroom window.  I was standing on it and one point and it made a loud creaking noise and I

"Meet Me at the Movies" Wrap Part at Weather Mark Tavern

After the screening of A Letter to Three Wives, the wrap party (dinner) was held at Weather Mark Tavern, 1503 S. Michigan Ave. Of all the films screened so far, Letter was the most talked about afterward.
They won a travel mug for bringing two new friends with them to "Meet Me at the Movies."

How did it end?
"Did Porter lie to Deborah? Did Brad run off with Addie Ross?" Well, who can know for sure? What I do know is everyone enjoyed A Letter to Three Wives, many seeing if for the very first time.

I LOVE this!!

I know I'm a little bit biased but I absolutely LOVE this ad for LOVE magazine!  Here's a sneak preview of the ad which has been done especially for the new British Vogue and GQ.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looks amazing!!  There will be eight covers for the September issue shot by the super talented Mert and Marcus.  I think it's one of the sexiest covers I've seen in a very long time!  Can't

I was delighted to be given these gorgeous Christian Dior to test.  Which I've been doing for the last six weeks.  I am obsessed with skincare products and have tried so many.
The Capture R60/80 Nuit XP Overnight Recovery serum is wonderful.  It sinks into your skin immediately and any dryness is immediately gone.  It appears to relax any lines and makes it really soft.  I've been putting it

This works - Skin Doctor

I still get the occasional spot or pimple.  This stuff, attractively called Zit Zapper by Australian company Skin Doctor is the best thing I've ever tried.  I've woken up inexplicably with a spot before and this clears it up within a day.  At the slightest hint of anything on my face now I put this on before I go to bed by the morning it's gone.  It really does work overnight.

Where I actually go to the cinema

I don't really like going to the cinema.  I think the last time I went was to the Trainspotting premiere!!  Well, actually it wasn't quite that long but I hardly ever go.  The Actor has only got me there twice in the four years we've been together.  Once he bribed me into it as he couldn't believe we'd never been.  He took me to see There Will Be Blood.  I'm not good at films that make me jump

Spencer's Birthday

After our late Sunday lunch it was a short walk down to Brick Lane for my best friend Spencer's Birthday.  I haven't been clubbing on a Sunday for ages and had forgotten what an amazing scene it is.  People who go clubbing on a Sunday really want to be out rather than think they should be out like the crowd on a Friday and Saturday night.  It was a such a good atmosphere in there.   I felt like

I always have to have a roast on a Sunday and I'm constantly looking for new places to try.  We're very lucky in the East End to have such a huge choice of places to go.  Nearly all the old pubs have been gentrified and the there's some fantastic food being served.  Gone are the days of overcooked meat, deep fried roast potatoes and soggy vegetables.  Thank God!

All About Addie (Ross)

A year before he won Academy Awards for the legendary All About Eve (1950), Joseph Mankiewicz won Academy Awards for writing and directing A Letter to Three Wives. Although not as legendary, A Letter to Three Wives is every bit as good, perhaps even better. Unlike Eve, Wives hasn’t deteriorated into camp parody.

The Invisible Woman
Unlike Eve, A Letter to Three Wives is centered on three young wives (Jeanne Crain, Linda Darnell, Ann Sothern) whose roles are fairly equal and intertwined. But perhaps the most intriguing character in the movie is someone you don’t even see.

Caustic Commentary
Addie Ross, the divorced friend of all three wives informs them that she’s run off with one of their husbands. Throughout the movie, Jeanne, Linda, and Ann are consumed with anxiety about the state of their respective marriages. We don’t see Addie, but we hear her snide remarks and commentary throughout the film, making her a major character. And it’s clear that all of the husbands adore Addie and speak of her often in conversations with their wives present.

Award Winner
Who is the voice of Addie? None other than Academy Award winner Celeste Holm (Gentlemen’s Agreement). Her rich and sexy voice helps create, in our minds, a woman who is at once beautiful, (so strong is her presence and the other characters’ reactions, we’re sure she’s beautiful) alluring, and mysterious. Even though Addie is a “friend” of the three wives, they all seem to envy and fear her, although they’d be hard-pressed to admit it.

From Addie to Karen
What was Holm’s reward for her voiceover work? A role in Mankiewicz’s All About Eve. And this time we actually get to see her. The role of Karen Richards, Margo Channing’s best friend, would earn Holm another Academy Award nomination. Even with the Academy Award win and two other nominations, Holm never achieved superstar status. Still, she created some memorable characterizations, including a character named Addie Ross: the woman who is heard, but never seen.

Heigh-ho!

Laid back Sunday

And it's not house music... for a change!

Here is a tune I've loved for years by Danish duo Laid Back from 1989.  It reminds me of my friend Fee Doran who used to play it when she DJ'd.  I've never seen the video until now and it's pretty amazing.

It's now available from iTunes for the princely sum of 79 pence.  It sounds great played loud with the bass turned up.

"Theodora Goes Wild" Screening Introduction

Midnight Screening of Classic Screwball Comedy
This is the introduction I gave to Theodora Goes Wild starring Irene Dunne on June 19, 2010. Most of the folks in attendance had never heard nor seen this screwball comedy classic. Not only that, but many were unfamiliar with the work of Irene Dunne. It's amazing that an actress five-times-nominated for Best Actress Academy Awards isn't a household name, but that's part of the point of screening classics like Theodora. There was an interesting discussion afterward (this was a midnight showing, so it's pretty remarkable to get a discussion going).

The above is kind of what my film classes are like. There's an introduction to the films screened, followed by a break, and discussion afterwards. My next film class begins Wednesday July 28 at 7 p.m. It's "Down To Earth Sophistication: Claudette Colbert in Hollywood." For registration information, click here.

"Slightly Scarlet" Midnight Movie at Facets Tonight

Cult Classic
Check out this 1956 classic based on the James M. Cain novel. The movie stars John Payne, Arlene Dahl, and Rhonda Fleming. It's in Technicolor, but fits the film noir category very well. The screeing is at midnight at Facets Film School, 1517 W. Fullerton Ave., Chicago IL.

Rare 35MM Print
The movie will be introduced by Julian Antos, assistant manager at Bank of America Cinema, a projectionist at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and a long time Facets volunteer. The 35mm print of Slightly Scarlet screened  is from his personal collection.

Highest Paid Actress in Hollywood
It Happened One NightDuring the 1930s and 1940s, Colbert was one of the highest paid stars in Hollwood, making upwards of $150,000 per film. That was big money during America's Great Depression. In 1938 Colbert held the title as the highest paid actress in Hollywood. While she was on top, she worked with some of the most talented directors in the business including, Ernst Lubitsch, Preston Sturges, John Ford, and Mitchell Leisen , to name a few. But her most famous role was as Ellie Andrews in Frank Capra's It Happened One Night for which she won the 1934 Academy Award for Best Actress.

Academy Award Winner
Since You Went AwaySpecializing in romantic comedy, Colbert was successful in all film genres including musicals. Producer David O. Selznick considered no other actress for the role of wartime wife Anne Hilton in his production of Since You Went Away. Selznick knew that in the hands of a less talented actress the role wouldn't be believable. Not only was Colbert believable, receiving her third Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, (the film was nominated for a total of nine Oscars) Since You Went Away was also one of the biggest box office successes of 1944.

Class and Professionalism
Midnight (Universal Cinema Classics)In 1939, Colbert starred with Don Ameche in Midnight, directed by Mitchell Leisen. One of the many great films from that memorable movie year, it is too often overlooked by today's film historians. Although she was a great comic actress with impecable timing, Colbert gave some memorable dramatic performances. Three Came Home, based on the memoir of American author Agnes Newton Keith gave the actress one of her best dramatic roles. Colbert was as true to her characterization as possible. Playing a prisoner in a Japanese prison camp during World War II, Colbert wore little makeup and allowed the right side of her face to be filmed. This may sound like nothing to the casual reader, but during most of her career, Colbert refused to be filmed from the right side, insisting it was unflattering. This often drove directors to distraction because all the blocking and camera set-ups would have to be changed to accomodate Colbert's wishes.

The Claudette Colbert Brand
What may appear to be the eccentric demands of a movie star were really the actions of a shrewd businesswoman. Colbert knew that fame and popularity were fleeting. Most of her demands had to do with protecting the Claudette Colbert "brand." She knew she was a commodity and she worked hard polishing her investment.

Colbert made over 60 films during her long career, and most are still worth watching.

"A Letter to Three Wives" is July "Meet Me at the Movies"

The Prairie District Neighborhood Alliance (PDNA) invites you to "Meet Me at the Movies," Friday July 30, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at Sherwood Community Music School, Columbia College recital hall, 1312 S. Michigan Ave.

A  Letter to Three Wives (1949) is based on a novel by John Klempner. His novel was entitled A Letter to Five Wives. Writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz thought the novel was too long and would be difficult to transfer to the screen. So, he shortened it to four wives and then shortened it again to three. Mankiewicz adapted the screenplay with author and screenwriter Vera Caspary (Laura).

The plot revolves around three wives who, just before going on a boat ride and picnic with some disadvantaged children, receive a letter from a society friend named Addie Ross. In the letter, Addie says she’s run off with one of their husbands. While the women spend the afternoon volunteering, each looks back on her marriage and wonders if hers is the husband who ran off with Addie.

Is it Deborah Bishop’s (Jeanne Crain) husband Brad (Jeffrey Lynn)? Deborah, a poor farm girl, met her husband in the Navy during World War II. Somewhat insecure and naïve, she thinks Brad is attracted to Addie because she is beautiful and sophisticated. Is it Rita Phipps’s (Ann Sothern) husband George (Kirk Douglas)? Rita has a career writing radio soap operas, the quality of which, her schoolteacher-husband disapproves. She wonders if her job, which brings in some much-needed cash, is somehow intimidating to George and ruining their marriage. Is it Lora Mae Hollingsway’s (Linda Darnell) husband Porter (Paul Douglas)? Lora Mae is a girl literally from the wrong side of the tracks who tries her best to marry up by marrying her boss, in part, to help provide for her widowed mother (the wonderful Connie Gilchrist) and younger sister Babe (Barbara Lawrence).

Like Mankiewicz’s All About Eve a year later, A Letter to Three Wives has witty dialogue delivered by a cast of pros. Crain, Sothern, and Darnell are all wonderful as the three wives, with Darnell a standout. As Lora Mae, Darnell has a tough exterior, but in many ways is more vulnerable than either Crain or Sothern.

For Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1949 was an extraordinary year. Not only did he win the Academy Award for Best Director, but he also won for Best Writing as well. Writing and directing was something Mankiewicz had always wanted to do and A Letter to Three Wives showcases Mankiewicz at the height of his creativity.

Admission to the movie is $5 and dinner afterward (optional) at the Weather Mark Tavern, 1503 S. Michigan Ave.  is $15.
